Rosemont Human Services Community Land Trust
Revitalize Mississippi is partnering with Rosemont Human Services (“RHS”) in West Jackson to create a Community Land Trust. The surrounding neighborhood around Rosemont M.B. Church (“Rosemont”) has been distressed and crime-ridden throughout the years. With the help of Pastor Jimmie Edwards and Rosemont, many blighted lots and neighborhood streets have been cleaned up and maintained, crime has been greatly reduced, and community gardens have been created. The neighborhood is now ready to do more.
RHS is acquiring tax-forfeited properties with suitable houses for rehab from the Secretary of State. Working with Construction Ministries, an apprenticeship opportunity will be provided for at-risk young men to learn the skills of rehabbing houses (“rehab lives as we rehab houses”).
These truly affordable houses will be sold to pre-qualified applicants, with help from Rosemont Human Services and Hope Credit Union. Income from selling the houses will be used by the CLT to rehab or build more houses, create gardens, playgrounds, etc.
Revitalize Mississippi is assisting with legal help, title clearing, and demolitions when needed. The Action for Jackson Fund is providing start-up funds to facilitate this project.
Blight and crime cannot be eradicated without cooperation and engagement of resident neighbors. In addition, crime cannot be addressed without training and job opportunities for at-risk young men.
Success with this project can set a good example for other neighborhoods.
